Lusi Alpaca Diary December 2015

Fit and well and looking forward top Spring!

The next round of AD&E vitamin supplements have been given along with wormers for the weanling crias. The first seven youngsters have been moved to their own paddock out of sight of their mums.

They seen to take this in their stride and the mums look quite happy not to have them pestering them for milk. The mums are already pregnant with next year’s cria so they can now devote all their nutrition and resources to the growing baby.

Two of our male weanlings will soon be going to a new home, so we have been halter training them ready for the move. We will miss them but they will be joining three of last years boys so will have lots of company and a great new home.

All the alpacas are looking fit and well so we now will look forward to the spring and ShowTime!!

The weather is still amazingly warm for December. Before moving the females to their winter paddocks we had to top the grass, as it was too long – never had to this in December before!

On the down side the rain has been pretty non-stop so paddocks are getting very muddy. All the alpacas have access to shelters to get out of the worst of the weather but they don’t always use them, some just hunker down in the rain and look sorry for themselves.

We supplement the grass with haylage that they can all have when ever they want, if the temperature drops down around freezing for any length of time we will add sugar beet to their feed for extra energy.

Awaiting his new home.
