Lusi Alpaca Diary July 2015

This month we had quite a surprise when one of our best black females popped put this little beauty, we were expecting a black cria as the sire is black as well but that’s alpacas for you – you never can be quite sure what will appear. She is absolutely gorgeous and we have named her ‘Honeycomb’

We have already started matings for next year’s crias. With an 11-month gestation the females get pregnant again within a month of giving birth, this is so we can keep the births in a short time frame next summer.

Towards the end of the month Lusi Alpacas hosted the Heart of England Alpaca Group ‘A Celebration of Fibre’

We had trade stands from processing mills, fibre producers, bedding manufacturers and individual breeders with their own unique products.

Over 80 visitors came along and tried their hand at spinning, weaving, fibre dying, knitting and crochet. There was lots of time for enthusiasts to sit in the sunshine and ‘talk fibre’ and we were very pleased with the positive feedback from the day. Lots of people got some really good ideas for what to do with their alpaca fibre and how to maximise the return.

Three more births to go now so still lots to look forward to in the next month.

Celebration of Fibre day in full swing.
